Tulare Irrigation District – District Mechanic
The Tulare Irrigation District (TID) is seeking a District Mechanic to work under the general supervision of the O&M Superintendent. The District Mechanic will perform minor and major repairs to gasoline and diesel vehicles, construction equipment, and other support equipment at the District. This role also involves overseeing all day-to-day maintenance and general updates for all district gasoline and diesel vehicles, construction equipment, and other support equipment. This is a Safety Sensitive Employee position as defined TID’s Personnel Policy Manual.
TID is one of the oldest irrigation districts in the State of California, formed under the California Water Code in 1889. TID delivers surface water for irrigation and groundwater recharge to approximately 200 growers and 1,300 acres of recharge basins, respectively. To deliver our surface water, TID operates and maintains over 300 miles of earthen canals and 30 miles of pipelines.
Supervision Received
The District Mechanic will report to the O&M Superintendent (General supervision).

The District Mechanic shall be able to plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of others as assigned to them.
Skills and requirements needed for this role include:
- Education and Experience: Graduation from high school is desirable, although sufficient work-related experience can substitute for this requirement. Training at an accredited mechanical/maintenance trade school or equivalent experience is required.
- Experience: A minimum of 3-6 years of experience in the mechanical maintenance field.
- Certifications/Licenses: Must be in possession of a California Class a driver’s license with Air Brake Endorsement and Hazmat Endorsement.
- Preferred Certifications: It is highly preferred to be in possession or obtain within 12 months an ASE A-1 to A-7 certificate, or approved equal, and then complete and obtain the ASE Automobile & Light Truck certificate (A-9), or approved equal.
- Knowledge and Skills:
- Skills in the use of mechanical tools and repair equipment.
- Knowledge of current automotive technology, procedures, methods, and safety practices in the maintenance and repair of construction equipment and vehicles.
- Ability to decipher and use equipment/vehicle repair manuals.
- Knowledge of internal combustion engine principles and care.
- Ability to implement preventative maintenance programs.
- Ability to coordinate multiple repair projects.
- Ability to maintain necessary documentation related to shop, inventory, and repair duties.
- Ability to work effectively with other shop and maintenance workers in a team-oriented fashion.
- Other Requirements
- Must be in possession of standard tools required to perform the District Mechanic position.
- Specialty Tools will be purchased by the District and maintained by the District Mechanic. The District shall provide an annual stipend to the District Mechanic to replace and/or purchase new standard tools.
- Must be prepared to work indoors, outdoors, and in all weather conditions year-round.
- Must be able to stand, bend, and twist frequently, and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Compensation
Compensation for this position is dependent on experience and will likely be in the range of $31.92 to $38.81 per hour. The employer contributes 5% and will match up to an additional 4% of the employee's contributions to retirement. Full medical for employees and an 85% contribution to dependents. Medical includes vision and dental coverage. Paid sick leave and vacation accrual. Bonus potential upon the CEO’s recommendation.

Typical Duties:
- Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic deficiencies on District automobiles, trucks, and a variety of maintenance and construction equipment, and make necessary repairs.
- Coordinates and prioritizes all equipment and vehicle repair work.
- Perform inspections on vehicles and equipment with air brakes, Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections, crane inspections, and other inspections as requested or required.
- Take necessary actions to ensure the District’s fleet and other assets comply with the California Air Resources Board requirements and other regulatory requirements.
- Determine the extent of necessary repairs, needed parts, and generate quotes for approval.
- Perform overhauls, repair/replace/adjust engines, transmissions (standard and automatic), differentials, and clutches, and estimate the cost of referenced work.
- Tuneāup engines, replace faulty parts, including but not limited to wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
- Make necessary repairs to ATVs, lawn mowers, chain saws, and other small engine components.
- Enter repairs and repair requests into the District fleet database.
- Prepare and replace miscellaneous components such as batteries, alternators, generators, distributors, relays, lights, valves, switches, etc.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot AC systems.
- Install and maintain special equipment on District vehicles, trucks, and construction equipment.
- Fabricate and modify parts as needed, including performing electric and acetylene welding and cutting work.
- Maintain work, time, and materials records, and any other service records on equipment, including parts and labor records, which may involve the preparation of periodic reports.
- Makes a variety of repairs in and out of the District shop, as well as in the field when required, including operation of sophisticated repair and diagnostic equipment.
- Maintains and organizes yard equipment storage.
- Responds to field calls for on-site construction and vehicle equipment repairs.
- Completes and maintains all necessary documentation regarding vehicle/equipment maintenance history, fuel storage and measurements, parts and supplies, and equipment.
- Performs Additional duties as prescribed by Management.
